Rodeo smodeo

We’d been looking forward to the rodeo since last year, when Nye got to ride a pony and an airplane. We drove down the street to pick up our best buddies, Cade and Charlie, when our mommy and daddy started chatting with their mommy and daddy. Then Nye and I wanted to ride on Charlie’s gator for just a minute before we hopped back in the car. Well, one thing led to another and we never left Cade and Charlie’s house. We spent all night riding the gator, chasing each other and playing with a (pretend) chainsaw -- not all that different from the rodeo, I guess.

Deux Ans

I still can’t believe my baby is 2 years old. How I wish I could stop time.

It was a low-key celebration for Callahan this year, which is just fine for him since he’s so easy to please. We had a family dinner featuring gluten free pizza and gluten free ding dongs from a local gluten-free bakery. Usually I bake a GF cake from scratch, but in the spirit of “Good is Good Enough,” I gave myself a break and hit the bakery, although I must admit the bakery-bought goodies do not compare to homemade.

In addition to wearing the coveted Birthday Hat, Callahan received some fun presents: Mr. Potato Head, a wooden frog that follows you when you pull the string (thanks aunt Chee Chee) and some cool shark PJs from Uncle Rob and Aunt J.

OK so he’s two. “That’s cool, but what can he do?” you ask. Well, he continues to go Number Two on the potty nearly every day. We have a child seat that sits on top of our toilet. He sits there and says, “It’s coming mommy; it’s a big one.” He loves to flush to toilet.

He’s extremely sweet, gentle and cuddly, both with people and animals. He loves the cats, especially Kitzie and Sue. Thankfully, both cats are very patient with him and put up with the poking and chasing.

He’s also very loving with his stuffed animals. Most nights, when we check on him again before going to bed, he’s sleeping with his arms wrapped around the bunny from Grammy M or the dog from Aunt Chee Chee.

A temper has emerged in recent weeks. When he says, “Mommy, come play (with) me,” you’d better do it. Otherwise, Cal becomes very frustrated, and will emphatically say “Come play (with) me” and then pull you to where you need to be, even if that includes pulling your shorts down. He’s also started ignoring bedtime. When he overhears mommy and daddy discussing who will brush his teeth and read a story, he starts yelling (very quickly) “no, no, no, no, no!” and runs away. Of course, this “temper” is balanced by his sweet disposition. All it takes is doing the bedtime routine in a different order or talking about it in a different way and he’s putty in your hands.

He’s also developed some strange, new fears: a fear of balloons and a fear of the swing in our front yard. Twice in the past two weeks he’s asked for a balloon at the store, but the moment we put it in his hands, he starts screaming and panicking. Cal used to love to swing in the front yard, but over the past month, he’s become fearful. He’ll say he wants to swing, but once we put him in the swing, he become extremely frightened.

Cal is helpful around the house. He loves to sweep and wipe up spills. He’s also fastidious about his hands; he’s always asking for a wipey, a napkin or to wash his hands. Maybe it’s because his hands are always covered in jelly or ketchup, which leads to the next category …

Currently, Cal’s favorite foods include: ketchup, plain grilled chicken, bananas, pumpkin bread, whole wheat bread with strawberry jelly and chocolate milk on special occasions.

What's Callahan up to these days?

Like younger siblings, Callahan wants to be a “big boy” like Nye. A few developments in this vein:

Callahan scoffs at sippy cups. He wants regular cups like everyone else. We’ve compromised and only limit the sippy to milk. He thinks the best thing about a “cup” is that you can fill it at the refrigerator door water dispenser, take a sip, pour it the cup of water into the sink, and then start all over again. We’ve had serious overflow issues more than once.

About a month ago, Callahan climbed out of his crib during naptime. I happened to walk in as he was about to step onto the floor. Surprisingly, he hasn’t done this again (that we know of). Nye loved his crib and didn’t climb out until he was 33 months old.

Cal makes an admirable effort to sit on the potty to do his business. About half the time, he alerts us in time to make it. The other half … well, he’s not even 2 yet. We’re just pleased that he’s thinking along these lines.

Hello, I'm Callahan

But you can call me Cal too. I also answer to "Porkchop," "Butterbean" and "Chunky Monkey." I'm five and one-half months old and I'm very happy and content.

Unlike my big brother, I don't have a full resume of accomplishments. But for the sake of posterity, I'll go ahead and share a few achievements: I'm rolling over every which way, I've been experimenting with my vocal chords a lot (a singing career may be in my future), I love to giggle, I sleep well at night, but not so well during the day (I need some coaxing to take naps), and I plan to start sitting up quite soon.

I must say I surprised my parents with my enthusiasm for solid foods. Mommy and Daddy had planned to hold off on solids until I hit the six-month mark, but when I saw everyone else eating "solid" food, I just couldn't help myself. I had to grab for everything and stretch my mouth wide open in hopes of getting just a nibble. All the colors and smells were just too much, I had to have it. After much squawking on my part, Mommy finally relented. So far I've enjoyed pureed apples, pears, squash, and green beans. I think squash is my favorite so far. I suspect things will only get better on the solid food front: mommy just retrieved Nye's old high chair from the garage and washed it ... I have a feeling I'll be spending some quality time there. :-)
