Bookworm

In the past few weeks, Nye seems to have lost interest many of his more simple books (The Very Hungry Caterpiller, Brown Bear Brown Bear, Are You Ticklish). Lately, he has been favoring the "big boy" books, which mommy has put on the top shelf to protect them from being torn apart and with the idea that they were a bit too plot and character driven for a not-quite-three-year-old.

For some reason, Nye pulled one down and mommy was eager for something a bit more meaty in the way of bedtime stories. Surprisingly, Nye has been captivated by the few "big boy" books we've read so far. Favorites include: Strega Nona (a nice Italian tale of a magic pot that cooks an endless supply of spaghetti), Amos and Boris (a mouse and a whale become close friends) and mommy's childhood favorite, Richard Scarry's Best Storybook Ever (the illustrations are truly beautiful).

Maybe it's no coincidence that his language skills seems to be improving (we're getting complete sentences and please and thank yous), along with his cognitive skills - he's forever "matching" things: the wine vacuum cork and the hot water bottle screwtop (they really do look alike), stripes on the chair and someone's shirt, a picture of a lion in a book and one of Nye's toy lions .....
